Let’s talk about something I hear all the time (usually right around the first cold snap or after a few days of rain):
“My dog seems stiffer lately—he’s limping more. Do dogs get joint pain when the weather changes?”
The answer is: YES, weather can absolutely affect your dog’s arthritis.
And no, you’re not imagining it. If your pup seems a little slower, stiffer, or more “meh” when the temps drop or it’s been damp for a few days, there’s a good chance those joints are feeling it.
What’s the Deal with Dogs, Arthritis, and the Weather?
Here’s the science-ish version:
- Barometric pressure drops (aka that thing that happens before it rains): Tissues around joints can swell a bit when the pressure changes, which means more pressure = more pain in already cranky joints.
- Cold weather: Muscles and joints get stiff when they’re cold—same as us. And if your dog is moving less because it’s chilly outside, the stiffness just piles on.
- Humidity: Dampness can make inflammation worse for some dogs.
So yeah, arthritic joints and weather changes are not a dream team. More like enemies.
Signs Your Dog Might Be Feeling the Weather in Their Joints
Some dogs are drama queens. Some are stoic warriors. Either way, watch for these signs:
- Limping (especially after rest)
- Trouble getting up or lying down
- Moving slower than usual (like “Do I have to go outside?” levels of slow)
- Hesitating on stairs or furniture
- Less interest in play or walks
- Acting grumpy or restless
If any of these show up—or get worse when the weather turns—you’re probably dealing with arthritis + weather = grumpy joints.
What Can You Do to Help?
Here’s the good news: You don’t have to just wait for spring and hope for the best. There are lots of ways to help your dog or cat feel better during weather flare-ups.
🐾 Keep them moving (gently)
Daily walks are great—just keep them short and steady. Think stroll, not sprint. Movement keeps joints happy, but overdoing it makes things worse.
🐾 Make a cozy spot
Soft, supportive beds in warm, draft-free areas = chef’s kiss. Bonus points for heated pet beds or orthopedic foam. (Wouldn’t blame you for trying it yourself, honestly.)
🐾 Joint supplements
Glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3s—all the hits. These can support cartilage and reduce inflammation. But not all supplements are created equal, so check with me before buying the first bottle you see online.
🐾 Watch the weight
Extra weight is basically an arthritis megaphone. If your dog’s a little “thick,” trimming down can seriously improve their comfort.
🐾 Meds when they need it
We’ve got safe, effective medications to help with pain and inflammation. If your dog or cat is hurting, let’s chat. No need to tough it out.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Wait for Spring
If your pup is limping more in cold or rainy weather, it’s not just the blues—it’s likely their joints talking. Arthritis doesn’t go away, but it can be managed. The sooner we start, the more comfy your dog or cat can be.
Don’t wait for a sunny day. Let’s make a plan now to keep those paws moving, tails wagging, and joints as happy as possible—rain or shine.
Book an appointment with me today. I’m here to help, and your dog or cat will thank you. (Probably with a slow tail wag and a nap in their heated bed.)
Stay warm out there,
Dr. Sanders
