Firework Safety & Anxiety Relief for Pets This Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is a day of fun and freedom—but for many pets, fireworks can be frightening. At Bowman, we want to help you prepare so your furry family members stay safe and calm during the festivities.

Why Fireworks Frighten Pets

Animals don’t understand that fireworks are meant for fun. The sudden flashes, loud booms, and unpredictable timing can trigger fear and anxiety. Pets with sound sensitivities, a history of trauma, or naturally nervous personalities are particularly vulnerable.
Watch for signs of stress, such as:

  • Trembling or hiding
  • Trying to escape or bolt
  • Excessive barking, whining, or meowing
  • Panting, drooling, or pacing
  • Restlessness or clinginess

If you see these, take action early—don’t wait.

Keep Your Pet Safe & Secure

1. Keep Pets Indoors

Whether at home or out celebrating, bring pets inside. Secure doors and windows, and consider keeping them in a quiet room away from fireworks zones. Many pets’ responses to fireworks are to run away, so keep them contained so they cannot injure themselves or get lost.

2. Create a “Safe Haven”

Set up a cozy spot with their bed, favorite toys, and blankets. Soft music, a TV show, or a white noise machine can help mask the sounds of fireworks.

3. Verify Identification

Collars and ID tags should be snug and up to date—make sure the microchip information is accurate, too. In case of escape, this increases the chances of a happy reunion.

4. Keep Their Routine Steady

Stick to normal mealtimes, walks, and play sessions. Predictability helps reduce stress.Physical exercise can help calm them as well, so try to get a longer session in before the festivities start.

Calm Their Nerves

Anxiety Wraps

Products like Thundershirt offer gentle, reassuring pressure—many pets find them soothing.

Calming Aids & Pheromones

There are many vet-approved pheromone diffusers, sprays, or professionally formulated supplements. Consult our team for recommendations.

Prescription Medications

For pets with a history of severe anxiety, anti-anxiety medications may help. It’s best to speak with a veterinarian here at Bowman Animal Hospital well in advance for a safe, effective plan.

Comfort Without Reinforcing Fear

Don’t punish fearful behavior—but avoid overreacting. Speak calmly, offer gentle reassurance, and maintain a relaxed demeanor to help them feel safe.

Plan Ahead. Not Last Minute.

Prepare early! Schedule a consult well before the holiday. That gives us time to craft the right strategy—wrapping, calming aids, medication trials—and make sure everything is in place. Additionally, fireworks are not a one-night event and can sometimes be set off in the weeks leading up to and after the Holiday. You may need to start these things early and continue them for a few days afer the 4th.
